Homophobia in Spanish-Language Media: GLAAD Files FCC Complaint
Media content promoting homophobia, machismo, racism and vulgarity are common among the Spanish-language media in the United States. This offensive media is presented daily to millions of viewers, it’s extremely damaging and it would not be allowed in English-language media.
Latinos tend to complain a lot about this problem, but little has been done to prevent it. Until now. The TV show “Jose Luis Sin Censura” has been accused of promoting homophobia, in a complaint presented to the Federal Communications Commission.
Today, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and the National
Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) filed a joint complaint with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) against the Spanish-language television program “José Luis Sin Censura” in response to the show’s “unrelenting attacks on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) guests” according to the GLAAD press release.
GLAAD concludes that, “in over a dozen episodes that aired between June 18, 2010 and November 11, 2010 alone, the program contained anti-LGBT language, including epithets such as “maricón,” “joto” and “puñal” (or [faggot] in English), and incited guests and audience members to engage in verbal and sometimes even physical attacks on people perceived to be LGBT. Many episodes showed the audience standing and shouting anti-gay epithets at guests. The Women’s Media Center also supports the complaint given the show’s hypersexualized images of women.

“José Luis Sin Censura” [see its official website] airs twice daily, Monday through Friday in 37 markets throughout the country. The show is produced, distributed and broadcast by KRCA62, a station owned by Liberman Broadcasting Inc. a media corporation based in Burbank, California.
Liberman Broadcasting is owned by José Liberman, a 84 y.o. white Mexican migrant naturalized U.S. citizen, and a radio broadcast veteran with stations in Houston and San Diego, and now in Los Angeles.
This is the recorded live stream press conference, held today by GLAAD.
Most media in Spanish language in the U.S. is produced and decided by non Latinos. For instance, Univision (includes Telefutura and Galavision) is owned by a group of White-owned corporations (Broadcasting Media Partners Inc.), and the racist corporation Televisa (Mexico). Meanwhile Telemundo is owned by NBC.
